A Pleasing Victory
I am happy, in fact ecstatic, to announce that in response to the following weeks’ heated debate as to whether The Age or The Herald Sun is the official ‘newspaper of the year’, I have taken the majority’s word to mean that The Age’s authentic, evocative journalism is what Australians, generally, prefer. Hence, those who wrote in favour of The Herald Sun must (perhaps that’s a little bit too harsh) may concede defeat. The Age has taken a magificent lead. A lead towards a better Australia…

Well, well. This is a rather small sample group on which to be basing a victory claim, tyronec! Long may the debate continue!
While we’re at it, what about The Australian? We tend to be rather parochial in Australia, and I think reading a paper that at least has a national rather than a state focus helps to address this problem. I also believe the standard of journalism in The Australian generally surpasses that of The Age (not to mention The Herald Sun).
Does anyone regularly read The Australian – or even an international newspaper?

I have no objection to the age being a superior newspaper but i find myself everyday reading the herald sun. Why? The age is just too big! if they would down size to a3 i would read it but reading it without it falling apart or getting ripped etc. is an impossible task without sitting down at a large table!!
I do agree! It is an unwieldy paper – very user unfriendly in that sense.

In response to the comment made by ‘dweedidwee’ and reinforced by Mrs Sweeney, I find it slightly unobservant that you would attack the length and width of the newspaper without thinking about the compromise that this would cause to the depth. In more simplistic terms, it would turn into a book! Please don’t waste your time attacking petty and unavoidable aspects of a newspaper, and focus on the literary aspect. In addition, I have never read The Australian, thus am unqualified to make a judgement.

I’m not “attacking” the size of it, merely saying it is unconventional to have such a big newspaper. Surely if they made it the size of the herald sun they could compromise by making it thicker, which is certainly not a problem.

It’s most definitely not unconventional to have large newspapers – broadsheets and tabloids have been around ever since the newspaper’s invention. The Australian is a broadsheet as well.
Personally I value writing quality over the Herald Sun’s (negligible) practicality; and anyway, you can just fold The Age in on itself rather than having two pages open at once.

I guess your right Richaod. As an example of the difference, the headline today about Cate Blanchett and the art gallery thing one the herald sun is: Cate’s Mates hit PM. On the age it says: Arts elite attack PM about images(or something like that, i cant quite remember). I think it is quite clear which is superior when it comes to literature.

It was a bit of a premature conclusion, Tyrone. The Age and the Herald Sun cater to different markets: one for the mainstream, celebrity obsessed public, and the other for the better informed demographic.

And which do you think would benefit society most, Jeremy?
